Amoxicillin can be removed from the circulation by haemodialysis. If you are having an operation or any dental treatment, tell the person carrying out the treatment which medicines you are taking. Health Tools Feeling unwell? If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is within an hour of your next dose, then carry on as before.
If an allergic reaction occurs, amoxicillin therapy must be discontinued and appropriate alternative therapy instituted. Anticoagulants Prolongation of prothrombin time has been reported rarely in patients receiving amoxicillin. Severe cases of nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea can be treated with rehydration therapy, by drinking fluids containing sodium, water and sugar to prevent dehydration.

As with any medication, antibiotics can cause side effects. Antibiotic-associated colitis has been reported with nearly all antibacterial agents and may range in severity from mild to life threatening see section 4. As necessary, expert advice should be sought when the local prevalence of resistance is such that the utility of the agent in at least some types of infections is questionable.
If you notice any side effects not mentioned in this leaflet, please inform your doctor or pharmacist.
Tetracyclines Tetracyclines and other bacteriostatic drugs may interfere with the bactericidal effects of amoxicillin. Following intravenous administration, amoxicillin has been found in gall bladder, abdominal tissue, skin, fat, muscle tissues, synovial and peritoneal fluids, bile and pus. If you experience any other symptoms which you think may be due to the antibiotic, speak with your doctor or pharmacist for further advice.
In very rare cases, this can lead to a serious allergic reaction anaphylaxiswhich is a medical emergency. However, in the literature there are cases of increased international normalised ratio in patients maintained on acenocoumarol or warfarin and prescribed a course of amoxicillin.
Make sure you tell your doctor if you are allergic to penicillin. Many mild bacterial infections also get better on their own without using antibiotics.
Enterococcus faecalis Beta-hemolytic streptococci Groups A, B, C and G Listeria monocytogenes Species for which acquired resistance may be a problem Gram-negative aerobes: If you stop taking the medicine, some bacteria may survive and cause the infection to come back, or your condition may re-occur or get worse.
If you forget to take a dose of your antibiotics, take that dose as soon as you remember and then continue to take your course of antibiotics as normal.
Subscribe to receive email notifications whenever new articles are published. Because elderly patients are more likely to have decreased renal function, care should be taken in dose selection, and it may be useful to monitor renal function.
If you suspect that you or someone else might have taken an overdose of this medicine, go to the accident and emergency department of your local hospital at once.
